News from Downton Band

Downton Band achieved notable success at  the Annual Wessex Brass Band contest held at Ringwood In November.  It won the 2nd Section playing the atmospheric “Penlee”, written by Simon Dobson, to mark the Penlee lifeboat tragedy in Cornwall December 1981.  It also won best march in the 2nd Section, a particularly poignant success as the Band played “The White Horse”, a march written by composer Andy Wareham to commemorate the Band’s 150th Anniversary in 2023.

On several evenings in December, the band were out and about playing carols around the village.  They also played for the village carol service and at Charlton All Saints.  The main band, supported by Beginner’s Brass and the Downon Training Band teamed up with the Community Choir to put on a free concert of Christmas music at St Laurence Church.

Currently, the Band is working hard on the test piece “Corineus” in preparation for the National Brass Band Championships qualifying weekend in Torquay on 9-10 March. A real highlight for the Band this year will be a full rehearsal weekend on 3 and 4 February which will be led by the test piece’s composer, Christopher Bond.

The Band is also planning to play a special concert in Downton on the afternoon of 4 May, venue and timing yet to be announced.

Another busy Christmas
