Downton Link
Volunteers providing a much appreciated service
Downton Link is run entirely by volunteers willing to assist members of the local community who need help with transport to medical appointments or other events. The service covers Downton and the surrounding villages and recruits local drivers. Its clients are enthusiastic about the service provided. One says, "Having a volunteer driver take me to the right hospital parking area gives me renewed confidence and maintains my link with my local community". Another comments, "I am picked up from my home and taken to Salisbury District Hospital, Salisbury Medical Centre, Dentist or Doctors Surgery. What a fabulous service! Thank you."
Becoming a Downton Link driver can be a rewarding pastime and more volunteers are always needed. It is an opportunity to meet local people with diverse backgrounds and people who have moved to the area to work or retire. Volunteer drivers receive a mileage allowance and are just as enthusiastic as the clients. They enjoy social events where they can meet other drivers. There is flexibility to choose when to drive: “I love volunteering for Downton Link because I choose which drives I do, and I fit them around my busy schedule.”
