Talks, projects and social events
At the Downton Society’s recent AGM, Helen Roberts gave a talk on the creation and restoration of the hillside map of Australia at Compton Chamberlayne. She spent more than four years coordinating a team to restore the chalk outline, originally created by members of the Australian Imperial Force stationed at Hurdcott Camp during the First World War. Restoration was completed in time for the 100th anniversary of the end of the war, and Anzac Day has been marked at the site annually since. The map is visible from the A30.
Over the summer, Society members took part in local projects including footpath clearing and a planting initiative with the Parish Council. The Committee also addressed planning matters and organised social activities such as a summer party and a visit to Downton Brewery. The next project is an exhibit for the Christmas Tree Festival, followed by planning events for the New Year.
The Society welcomes new volunteers and members. More information is available at thedowntonsociety.org.
